Near Garden
Near Garden is the first dive you reach as you turn left out of Naama Bay jetty, hence the name "Near". It is part of a long stretch of reef starting from the end of Naama Bay and heading North. This whole area is known as the Gardens, as the reef really is like a pretty garden in this area. With white sand, the sun's light is reflected upwards and the colourful coral stands out against this. The clarity of water allows for these colours to really shine out. Hence the term "Garden".
Near Garden specifically is a relatively small site. Often reached at the end of a drift dive from Middle Garden, however it is really quite pretty in its own right and can be done as a mooring dive.
The sandy plateau is quite minimal on this dive and is a steeper slope than those on Middle and Fiddle Gardens, hence not always used for teaching, and because it is a headland, it can be prone to currents on occasions. These currents however, as always, bring whith them the life that makes the reef so pretty. There are also a few pinnacles in this area that are real magnets for life, so some time can be spent just circling these to get a good look at everything. There is an area of this reef though that has seem some quiet serious damage. I am not sure whether this is due to previous anchor damage, or what, but it does highlight how fragile the reef is, and how careful we need to be.
